NEWBORN TO 3 MONTH BABY DRESS




MATERIALS:
Crochet hook, size 6.5mm (US K 10.5)
Worsted weight yarn, 198 grams
Gauge 3 stitches = 1 inch

INSTRUCTIONS:
  • Chain 34, (16 inch chest)     double crochet in the 3rd stitch from the hook,  and in each stitch of the chain.
  • Chain 2 and turn, *2 double crochet in the next stitch, double crochet in the next     stitch, repeat from * across the row. (48 stitches)
  • Repeat step 2 (72 stitches)
  • *Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in each stitch across the row.
  • Repeat step 4.
  • Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in the next 8 stitches, skip the next 18  stitches,  double crochet in the next 18 stitches, skip the next 18 stitches, double crochet in the next 9 stitches, (sleeve openings formed).
  • Chain 2 and turn, double crochet in the same stitch, *double crochet in the next     stitch, 2 double crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join.
  • Chain 2 and turn, *in the space between the next 2 double crochet, make 3 double crochet, (shell stitch formed),  skip the next stitch, double crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * across the row.  At the end of the row, slip stitch to join.
  • Chain 2 and turn, *in the center stitch of the next shell, make 4 double crochet, skip  the next  stitch, double crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join.
  • Chain 2 and turn, *in the center of the next shell, make 5 double crochet, skip the     next 2 stitches, double crochet in the next stitch.  (You will be working a shell in the center of the shell of the previous row, and a double crochet in the single double crochet of the previous row. This lines up the shells in a vertical row.) Repeat from * around, slip stitch to join.
  • Chain 2 and turn, *in the center of the next shell, make 6 double crochet, skip the next 2 stitches, double crochet in the next stitch.  Repeat from * around, slip stitch to join.
  • Chain 2 and turn, *in the center of the next shell, make 7 double crochet, skip the next 3 stitches, double crochet in the next stitch
  • Chain 2 and turn, *in the center of the next shell, make 8 double crochet, skip the next 3 stitches, double crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join.
  • *Chain 4, skip the next stitch, single crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * around, except for the last loop, chain 2, double crochet in the base of the next chain 4 loop. Single crochet in the same loop.
  • *Chain 4, single crochet in the next loop. Repeat from * across the row ending with a loop made by chain 2, double crochet in the first stitch of the next loop. Repeat step 15 for as many rows as you would like.  This is the step that determines the length of the dress.  Newborn in this sample has 5 rows.
  • Finish the back opening of the dress:     Attach yarn on either side at the neck, chain 2, evenly double crochet all around the back opening of the dress.
  • Finish the neck of the dress:     Chain 4, skip the next stitch, single crochet in the next stitch, repeat from * around the neck of the dress and fasten off.  Weave all yarn ends into the finished work.     Sew a button on the back of the dress, and use an opening between double crochet stitches as a buttonhole. (Ensure that you choose a large enough button so that it fits snugly through the opening, and won't easily slide out.)
